all that glitters

Holidays are the perfect excuse to wear a little extra sparkle. Whether this comes from glittery sweaters, gemstone jewelry, or the bubbles in champagne, Christmas celebrations are all about beautiful light.

This month (and just about every other month of the year), I am loving vintage-inspired jewelry.

Statement earrings to be specific.

Now let's take a peek at some of my favorites!

Some of these darling pieces are recently purchased, and some really ARE vintage!

This pair happens to be one of my very favorites. They match just about everything, which is a VERY good quality in jewelry if you ask me!

Every Christmas, my sisters and I do a secret santa exchange to save a little money. These blue gems were given to me this year by my sister Chloe. I would say that she has expert gift giving taste, but I actually helped her out a little (ok actually a lot)...earrings66

The next two pairs are also blue and also from Target (I'm sensing a trend here).

These pearl and gold beauties are another vintage find. I just love how versatile and effortlessly classy they are!

Wishing you a lovely, light filled holiday with a little added sparkle!

there's s(no)w place like home

The drive home from Christopher Newport on Saturday brought along a long lost friend. I'll give you a hint: she's white, fluffy, and the only reason for happy children on wintry weekday mornings.

Let's hear it for SNOW, the perfect excuse for Ugg boots, hot drinks, and plenty of peppermint candy canes.

This morning, I braved the cold temperatures (with bare legs!) and did a little winter wonderland adventuring. Plenty of dashing, drifting, and laughing occurred in the making of these photos...

BeFunky_IMG_1015This beautiful vintage bracelet was given to me over Thanksgiving break by my grandmother. She used to wear it to college parties and sorority events, and naturally, I fell in love with it at first sight. BeFunky_IMG_100fdxgchvjb8

J(Crew)ust in time for Christmas

Santa's elves are busily working the toy factory. On the other hand, I am sipping peppermint tea and frantically shopping at a very different kind of factory...

J Crew Factory to be specific.

With only nine days left until December 25th, the time to finish last minute gift shopping is drawing upon us.

And to make the rush a tad easier, J Crew factory is ALL 50%, (with an extra 10% and free shipping using code 12DAYS)!

Here are some of my favorite picks from the sale, and also some samples of what I already ordered last week!

May the days leading up to Christmas be filled with hot chocolate, good company, and maybe a little mistletoe.

thankfulness & plaid

: glad that something has happened or not happened, that something or someone exists, etc.

At this moment on December 2nd, I am thankful for three certain things:

1. That I am blessed with such a fun and loving family. There is never a dull moment at the Long house. EVER

2. Black watch plaid (my favorite thing to wear at the moment)

3. The fact that I ran into one of my favorite bloggers, the darling Rachel Timmerman of A Preppy State of Mind. We both happened to be in Colonial Williamsburg at the same time (I knew this because of instagram), and I was simply dying to run into her! I am a firm believer that God makes things happen for a reason, and he happened to put us both on Duke of Gloster St. at the same minute. It was so delightful to meet her, along with her mom and adorable puppy Jaycee. Talk about a one in a million chance!

On the topic of my favorite tartan, I recently made a purchase in a place I never shop: the men's department. Let's just say it has quickly become one of my favorite pieces! My Black Watch plaid flannel  (see bottom left) goes perfectly with just about anything, it has made appearances with leggings and riding boots, skinny cords and flats, and will soon go over dresses for a little extra warmth.

Here are some of my other favorite fall pieces. At least one of them makes an appearance in my outfit on an almost daily basis!

1. Fur vest//2. Riding boots (similar)//3. Jeweled sweater//4. Oversized flannel//5. Camel polish//6. Skinny cords//7. Lace shift dress (similar)

These items all have one thing in common: they are fabulously versatile, comfortable, and darling.

(Just kidding, 3 things!)

Stay tuned for more styling featuring my favorite tartan.

Have a beautiful day, and Happy Cyber Monday shopping!

eye candy

Lately, I have had an incurable craving for candy corn.

Okay, maybe that's a bit of an understatement...let's go with obsession.

I have also had a little infatuation with Our World Boutique, my new favorite place for darling statement necklaces, my favorite type of a very different treat. (aka eye candy)

When I got the email that this darling neckwear had arrived in my mailbox, I grabbed a pair of scissors and ran to the Student Union. Looking back, this probably wasn't the best idea in the world...

But hey, I can't help that packages make me extremely happy.

(Especially when they contain something as delightful as this topaz and sapphire gem!)

With fantastic prices (most pieces are $10 or less!) and gorgeous designs, Our World will probably make frequent appearances in my friend's gift bags this Christmas.

Aside from candy corn, this week has included a beach trip, Halloween festivities, and lots of runs in the perfect fall weather. It will soon include football and homecoming, which is THIS WEEKEND!

(If you can't tell, I also really love homecoming)

Have a fabulous rest of your week, and don't forget to make a little time to enjoy this beautiful world that God created and all the people in it, no matter how busy your schedule is.

Also remember that candy corn and online shopping have incredible healing properties...

with lots of love,

vintage gems

With the combination of freshman move-in, college classes, and all the other new and exciting things that come along with being a first-year, I've been just a little busy.

Which is why (I'll take a second to apologize right now), I have yet to announce the two lucky giveaway winners...

(drumroll please)

Congratulations to Emilee and Taylor! These two lovely ladies will be receiving custom-made silver rings. (don't forget to send me your sizes!)

With that all said and done, this week's post goes along with the jewelry theme...

While my favorite jewels may not be custom made, they are equally as darling and delightful.

Let's give it up for VINTAGE!

vintage gems

Back before the days of Charlotte Russe and Forever 21, jewelry was handcrafted and high quality. That same value today comes with a heavy price tag.

But who says you can't have both?

Here are some of my favorite spots for finding these treasures:
-thrift and consignment stores

-grandma's closet

-under the christmas tree (hand-me-down jewelry is such a special gift!)

Pearls for pennies? Sounds like my kind of shopping.

And now for a sampling of my favorite vintage gems.

A girl can never have enough pearls. I have almost every length, size, and color thanks to my grandma's jewelry box.BeFunky_null_1fghj

I hope you enjoyed my favorite treasures, and have a beautiful day.

sailing away

September 2nd is only about two weeks away.

And why, you ask, could this date possibly matter?
Because September 2nd is Labor Day, the time to say goodbye to all things summery and white.

This leaves us with exactly twenty days to wear white pants. My favorite pair happen to be of the sailor variety...

sailing away

This week also happens to be my very last week at home before I sail away to college and become a captain. (no pun intended, but this is REALLY my university's mascot!)

Could there possible be a better time to wear these pants?
I didn't think so.

sailing away

Let's start with the necklace.

Last Friday, I spotted this little gem in a gallery downtown. It has quickly became my favorite accessory! You can NEVER go wrong with vintage: tried and true blue is always a classic.

sailing away

Buttons are some of my favorite things, and the very best way to hold pants in place. On this little number I get three on each side: the more the merrier!

Adding wedges to wide leg pants equals instant height. (which is always a good thing)sailing away

I hope that the remainder of August is filled sun, smiles, and LOTS of ice cream.

All the best wishes for smooth sailing into college, and have a beautiful day!

corn, bacon, & peach salad

Last Friday, my mom came home from the farmer's market with armloads of fresh produce.

And I was starving.

This predicament just so happens to be the perfect storm for a concoction...

After digging through the bags (hungry girl gotta eat!), I found three of my favorite things in the whole entire world: corn on the cob, farm fresh bacon, and perfectly ripe peaches.

Did I mention they were all at the peak of perfection?

Here is the end result, and the perfect summer salad...

(aka heaven)

corn, bacon, and peach salad

(makes 2 salads)

3 slices of bacon

1 ear of corn

1 medium, ripe, sliced peach

4 cups of mixed greens

2-4 tablespoons of honey balsamic dressing (see recipe below)

1/4 cup of crumbled goat cheese (optional)

Step 1: Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Add the corn and boil, covered, 4-5 minutes.

Remove the corn from the boiling water when done.

Step 2: While the corn is cooking, fry the bacon in a skillet over medium heat, cooking on both sides until crispy.

Step 3: Slice the corn off the cob and crumble the bacon

Step 4: Divide the lettuce onto two plates and add the sliced peaches. Top with the corn, crumbled bacon, and goat cheese (if desired). Drizzle each salad with 1-2 tablespoons of honey balsamic dressing.

Honey Balsamic Dressing

1/4 cup of balsamic vinaigrette (Newman's own is the BEST)

2 teaspoons of honey

1 teaspoon of dijon mustard

Step 1: (the first, last, and only step) Whisk all ingredients together and enjoy!

some other bits

-try grilling the peaches and corn for a delicious, smoky flavor

-add grilled chicken for more protein

My concoction turned out to be wonderfully delicious AND super healthy at the same time (a little bacon doesn't hurt)!

Do you have any salad recipes that scream summer? Feel free to comment and share! (:

Have a fabulous Sunday!

the little red dress

The little black dress had been a classic since the days of Coco Chanel. With limitless versatility and flattering qualities, it seems almost impossible to go wrong in choosing it for any event. Unless that little dress is red.

I like to say that red is the new black.

With a pop of color, the red dress instantly lights up a room. And since red is a power color, what better hue to wear to a job interview?

I found this little red dress for $12.

Let me repeat that for you: $12.

(you can find some amazing deals by keeping an eye on American Eagle clearance)

Since that incredible purchase last winter, this dress has traveled to both coasts of the United States. It has been worn to piano recitals and job interviews, and has even graced the font of the local section in the city newspaper.

Let's just say I like it. A lot.

Let's go from head to toe.

I styled this little red gem with my favorite accessory: pearls (and lots of them!).

The flutter sleeves give a darling, feminine touch.

A small, red, tie front sash cinches the waist for a finished look.

BeFunky_null_35    BeFunky_null_36

These Mary-Jane style heels (from Target!) are my very favorite dress-up shoes. They give the whole outfit a charmingly vintage vibe.

I styled this particular outfit for an interview, but it could easily be worn for almost any occasion. When the weather gets colder, I like to add black tights for a Christmas-party perfect look.

Enjoy your last few weeks of summer (it's gone by WAY too fast), have a beautiful day, and check out American Eagle clearance (it's all 50% off right now, and you're bound to get lucky like I did)!
